Abstract
The city of Matanzas, Cuba, has a rich history, from its sighting by Christopher Columbus in 1494 to its founding in 1693. Its port, fortifications, and urban design positioned it as a key cultural center in the 19th and 20th centuries, with significant contributions in literature, music, art, and science. Despite its economic growth driven by the sugar industry, Matanzas is characterized by solid architecture and the absence of arcades, preserving its historical memory through various monuments and spaces. Today, the city faces challenges such as climate change and heritage preservation but remains a cultural and tourist hub, excelling in community education and the restoration of its historic center. Now 330 years after its foundation, Matanzas retains a unique identity and a commitment to preserving its cultural and natural legacy.
