Abstract
In line with Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 13, a reliable and sustainable energy supply is crucial for socioeconomic development and reducing energy poverty in rural areas. This study focuses on sizing an interconnected photovoltaic power generation plant for the Tsáchila del Búa Commune in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas in Ecuador. The study involved assessing solar resources and local electricity demand, as well as performing a techno-economic analysis using HOMER Pro® software, and using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was also applied to select the optimal scenario. Meteorological results showed an average solar irradiance of4,6 kWh m⁻² day⁻¹ and an annual mean temperature of 24,5 °C, confirmed the technical feasibility of solar utilization in the area. The simulation determined that the interconnected (on-grid) system constitutes the most efficient alternative, with an installed capacity of 77,9 kW, an annual generation of 95.284 kWh, a levelized cost of energy of 0,0645 USD kWh, and annual operating costs of 5.437,80 USD. The estimated initial investment of 93.879,17 USD and a lifespan of 25 years validate its economic profitability and environmental sustainability. The findings demonstrate that the implementation of the proposed photovoltaic system would enhance energy autonomy and electrical resilience in rural and indigenous communities, providing a technical basis for sustainable electrification policies across the Ecuadorian territory.
