Deconstruct the environmental Thermidor. On the keys to reading from the critical perspective of Franz Hinkelammert

Abstract

One of the most prolific ideas identified in the work of thinker Franz Hinkelammert has to do with his vision of the economy as a great religious entelechy, which functions as a whole system of beliefs where human rites and sacrifices are practiced in the name of the preservation of its maximum deity: capital. Fetishism and idolatry are the religious forms that in some way identify the behavior of people when they become directly involved with this system either to survive or to act in consonance with consumption and the infinite production of capital. This theological reading of the capitalist economic system folds to the analysis of the environmental debacle and tries in the midst of chaos and adversity, to think if from social ecology, green citizenship and environmental justice to deconstruct the thermidor that has decreed the industry and the market against the preservation of natural resources. This research seeks to make use of the critical analysis proposed by Hinkelammert, to go beyond the environmental thermidor, and thus think of an eco-philosophy as a response and alternative to the dogma that capitalism is a religion.
