Resumen
La contaminación por microplásticos en arenas de playa representa una creciente preocupación global debido a su ubicuidad y a la diversidad de formas, tamaños y composición polimérica, lo que complejiza su gestión. En Venezuela, se ha documentado la presencia significativa de microplásticos en ambientes costeros, con potenciales implicaciones para los ecosistemas marinos y la salud humana debido a su persistencia y bioacumulación. Este estudio evaluó la abundancia, distribución y características de los microplásticos en la arena de tres playas turísticas del noreste de Venezuela, muestreadas durante los períodos de sequía, transición y lluvia, siguiendo el protocolo de la OIEA (Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica). Los microplásticos se separaron, usando una lupa estereoscópica, y se clasificaron por su forma y color, contabilizando 511 partículas durante el periodo de estudio. En cuanto a la variación espacial de la densidad no se encontraron diferencias significativas en las tres playas estudiadas, sin embargo playa Venalum presentó diferencias significativas con respecto a los periodos climáticos, en cuanto a forma y color. Los microplásticos más abundantes fueron las fibras transparentes, constituidas químicamente por nilón, luego las fibras azules, negras y finalmente las blancas y rojas estas dos últimas de polipropileno. La predominancia de nilón y polipropileno sugiere posibles fuentes relacionadas con actividades pesqueras y domésticas, subrayando la necesidad de estrategias de mitigación específicas para las costas venezolanas.
