Abstract

The Australian spotted jellyfish Phyllorhiza punctata is currently recognized as an exotic jellyfish with invasive potential in Atlantic waters, probably introduced through port activities; with records in several countries of the Caribbean Sea, however, until 2021, its presence in Colombia had not been confirmed. In April of that year, thanks to photographs and videos taken by tourists and researchers in the department of La Guajira, and the collection of a specimen, the first confirmed record of this species for the Colombian Caribbean was made. Further study of its population dynamics is required to assess whether a population has been established in the region. These sightings reinforce the importance of citizen science as another sampling tool, especially in little known or studied groups, providing information that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.
